Our Services

Live Well Counseling Center is proud to employ highly trained and skilled therapists who offer services that very few other practices provide. Click on the links below to learn more.

Aging Parents and Caregiving

As the average lifespan continues to increase, many people are facing the difficult situation of reversing roles with their parents. Taking care of one’s own parents can create a lot of stress, often because the caregiver is still a part of the workforce and may still be taking care of one’s own children. The emotional ties between the parent and child can also make it difficult to see the situation objectively. Decisions related to assisted living or a nursing home due to the parent's failing health are often clouded by emotional attachment to the family home or refusal to accept the parent's current state. Therapists at Live Well Counseling Center can help those involved — through individual and/or family therapy — to deal with the stress and make rational decisions while maintaining respect for the wide range of emotions involved.

Alcohol and Drug Counseling

With licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselors on staff, Live Well Counseling Center provides a continuum of services for adolescents and adults.

See our Specialty Services for more information.

Anger Reduction

Anger is one of our natural emotional responses, but it can feel overwhelming and become out of control or habitual. This can cause legal, family, relationship and other problems. Our therapists are well-equipped to help people develop strategies for dealing effectively with anger.

Recommended Book:

Anxiety is a common issue for many of us. A certain amount of anxiety is normal and necessary for healthy functioning. However, anxiety can easily become abnormal, creating distress and leading to disease. It can destroy sleep, appetite and sex life. It can create chronic tension in the body. Excessive anxiety and worry can become a "generalized anxiety disorder," causing impairment in social and occupational functioning. Unmanaged or untreated anxiety can lead to panic attacks and is associated with medical conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, cardiac arrhythmia, hypoglycemia, seizure disorders, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.

We can learn to manage anxiety so it doesn't get the best of us. And, the earlier intervention is applied, the better. Our professional staff is trained to assess and treat anxiety disorders in adults, adolescents and children.

Our assessment utilizes a holistic model and assesses health, environment/interpersonal relationships, attitudes/behaviors, spirituality and base of social support.

We use a variety of methods to help clients achieve successful outcomes. Such methods often include behavioral/cognitive therapy, EMDR (learn more below), breathing exercises and progressive body relaxation, visualization, imagery desensitization and biofeedback using the Freeze-Framer® technology. The therapists at Live Well Counseling Center can also provide coping strategies for anxiety sufferers to be able to move on and thrive in life (learn more below under "Coping Skills").

Recommended Books:

Assertiveness Training

Many people have trouble asserting themselves. Being assertive means finding a place between passivity and aggression from which to share one's thoughts. We can help you develop the skills to respect other people's boundaries, while also respecting yourself.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are common in children and even in adults. In children, ADHD and ADD can lead to problems in school and in interacting with others. Adults dealing with ADD/ADHD may have trouble in work and in relationships. At Live Well Counseling Center, we can provide ADD/ADHD sufferers with coping strategies in order to minimize the effects of the disorder on their lives (learn more below under "Coping Skills").

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Typically, developing infants are social beings. Children with autism spectrum disorders, however, have trouble learning to engage in the give-and-take of ordinary human interaction. Many avoid interaction and eye contact. They appear indifferent to others, and often seem to prefer being alone.

Children with autism spectrum disorders are attached to their parents, but their expression of this is unusual and difficult to read. Parents may not perceive their child as attached at all. Children with autism spectrum disorders are slower in learning to interpret other people’s thoughts and feelings, and will miss social cues. The inability to interpret gestures and facial expressions make their world a bewildering place.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates 3.4 per 1000 children between the ages of three and 10 will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Each condition reflects degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interaction and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autistic disorder, Asperger’s syndrome and pervasive personality disorder-not otherwise specified are most common. Rett syndrome and childhood degenerative disorders are far more rare.

The clinical staff at Live Well Counseling Center has been trained to screen for autism spectrum disorders. The best time to screen and begin treatment is when a child is in preschool. Once initial screening suggests further investigation, our staff will assist parents in assembling a second stage evaluation and treatment team, which may include a psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist, pediatrician and others. We will assist in providing coping skills for both the child and parents (learn more below under "Coping Skills").

Breast and Prostate Cancer Survivors

We work not only with the individuals who are experiencing or have experienced cancer, but also with their spouses and families in coping with their stressors.

Live Well Counseling Center professionals are trained in holistic practices, acknowledging the integration of body/mind/spirit in the healing process. Our professionals meet clients where they are in their own spiritual development and work respectfully within that framework. Our professionals are each aware and honor their own body/mind/spirit connection.

Child/Adolescent Behavioral Issues

Children and adolescents are by no means perfect — and neither are parents. Nearly every parent has felt overwhelmed when it comes to controlling his/her child's behavior. The same strategies do not work for everyone, which is why the therapists at Live Well Counseling Center are prepared to help you try several different methods of parenting until you find one that works for you.

Chronic Pain Management

Although no one likes to deal with pain, and we always hope for an ultimate cure that will eliminate the discomfort, the truth is that by the time pain has become a chronic condition, treatment begins to focus more on managing the symptoms. This program helps participants develop realistic expectations about managing their pain long-term.

See our Specialty Services for more information.

Co-dependency is an exhausting way to live life. Constantly striving for the approval of others, while losing focus of oneself, can lead to unhealthy relationships, anger, fear of abandonment, lack of trust and many other negative effects. At Live Well Counseling Center, we will help you to identify the signs of co-dependency in your life and to break free of those co-dependent behaviors.

Live Well Counseling Center is dedicated to enhancing and preserving relationships. Skilled conflict management and mediation help resolve problems while preserving relationships and is a process that can be utilized with a variety of conflicting issues.

Our professional counselors are trained to assist families, employers and their employees, and organizations in skilled conflict management. All of our clinical staff have been trained in conflict management, helping parties find solutions that work for them.

Additionally, Live Well Counseling Center has a partnering relationship with Central Mediation Center to further enhance services. Trained mediators use a collaborative problem-solving process, which is respectful and fair.

As our name attests, helping families is a specialty at Live Well Counseling Center. Our therapists are relationship specialists, providing premarital and marriage counseling, as well as therapy for children and families. For example, individuals can gain new parenting strategies or find ways to improve their communications skills with their spouse or children. In addition, we help blended families find ways to work through their unique challenges, and assist individuals in balancing their relationship between their family of origin (i.e., parent and siblings) and their spouses and children.

Sometimes, however, a marriage cannot be repaired. In these situations, we help a couple accept and cope with dissolving the marriage in as healthy a way as possible. Our class for divorcing parents, "Who's Taking Care of the Children," educates parents on how to successfully help their children cope with the divorce in healthy ways.

Marital therapy, as well as premarital therapy, is recommended for anyone wanting to enhance the quality of their relationship so that needs are better met. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Stress is a term used to describe the wear and tear the body experiences in reaction to everyday tensions and pressures. Change, illness, injury or career and lifestyle changes, are common causes of stress. However, it's the emotional pressure and tension we feel in response to the little everyday hassles — rush hour traffic, waiting in line and too many emails — that do the most damage.

Stress affects people physically, mentally and emotionally. According to the American Institute of Stress, up to 90 percent of all health problems are related to stress. Too much stress can contribute to and agitate many health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and sleep disorders.

The first step is to understand how stress works. It's not the events or situations that do the harm; it's how you respond to those events. More precisely, it's how you feel about them that determines whether you are stressed or not.

The mind is known to be a factor in stress and stress-related disorders. Meditation has been shown to positively affect a range of autonomic physiological processes, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing overall arousal and emotional reactivity. We teach meditation, breathing and yoga techniques, as well as HeartMath solution techniques, as ways to effectively manage stress. Additionally, we teach stress tolerance coping skills, utilizing solution-focused, well-researched emotional intelligence strategies.

Our professional staff at Live Well Counseling Center is trained in the HeartMath stress management system using Freeze-Framer® technology as a powerful tool to help manage stress and anxiety. HeartMath's research has shown when you intentionally shift to a positive emotion, heart rhythms immediately change. This shift in heart rhythms creates a favorable cascade of neural, hormonal and biochemical events that benefit the entire body. The effects are both immediate and long lasting.

The HeartMath stress management system introduces you to two tools to help you increase physiological coherence: The Quick Coherence™ technique to use in your daily life to reduce the effects of stress and the Freeze-Framer® technology to accelerate your learning and enhance your practice.

Mood Disorders Due to General Medical Conditions

The physical effects of accidents, strokes, cancer and other medical conditions are very well known. The emotional effects of these conditions are often a secondary concern, if they are thought of at all. It is important to recognize that drastic changes to a person's medical condition often have drastic effects on a person's emotional health. At Live Well Counseling Center, we are experienced in helping medical clients cope with their psychological changes.

Parenting Act Required Divorce Class

Who's Taking Care of the Children?
A divorcing parents workshop.

This is an interactive, energizing class that promotes brainstorming, problem solving and sharing as parents are re-oriented towards successful single parenting.

This class is designed to meet the court-ordered requirements in Nebraska for divorcing parents.  Our class offers parents the opportunity to focus on their children's needs during divorce/separation by reviewing the stress symptoms in children, designing goals for their children and identifying ways to reduce the stress by recognizing barriers and providing structure.

This class helps your child survive and thrive while helping you take care of yourself and move forward.

In our Grand Island office, this class is taught by our own motivational therapist, Carrie Sheldon. In Broken Bow, the class is offered by Jessica McCaslin. Through humor, lessons and practical experience, we strive to help you help your children in adjusting as easily as possible. The class consistently gets rave reviews. There is a waiting list, so we suggest pre-registration as class size is limited. This class is offered on Saturday mornings in our Grand Island, Kearney and Broken Bow offices. Performance Enhancement

Live Well Counseling Center clinicians are trained using EMDR peak performance protocol, which can be applied to the workplace and career, performing and creative arts, athletics and academics. This protocol is useful for both adults and students. This type of intervention can help a client break through obstacles of performance anxiety, perfectionism, fear of failure, and concerns about sustaining success. It is also useful for clients who wish to make their future template real, whether going to work, beginning a relationship or starting a family.

Positive Psychology & Mindfulness Training

A positive outlook can go a long way in improving not only a person's mental well-being, but also his or her physical well-being. Our therapists can help you learn to be more optimistic about life and put yourself in more positive situations to aid in positive psychology.

Premarital Counseling

With high divorce rates, it is important to take marriage seriously. One way to help ensure your compatibility with your significant other before marriage is to receive premarital counseling from our relationship specialists. Premarital counseling helps couples learn more about the qualities and characteristics of a good marriage. Counseling can also ensure that the couple engages in meaningful conversation about issues that can become divisive in marriage — such as money, where to live and the decision whether to have children. Talking about these issues and learning some key information before marriage will help the couple to avoid marriage-ending altercations later on.

Stress Tolerance Coaching

The book “The EQ Edge” by Steven Stein, PhD, and Howard E. Book, MD, defines it as:

“This realm of emotional intelligence concerns your ability to withstand stress without caving in, falling apart, losing control or going under.  Success in this area means that you are usually calm, rarely impulsive and cope well under pressure.  In the workplace, these skills are vital if you customarily face tight deadlines or must juggle many demands on your time.  At home, they enable you to simultaneously maintain a busy household and be mindful of your physical health.”

Substance Abuse/Families Dealing with Substance Abuse

With licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselors on staff, Live Well Counseling Center provides a continuum of services for adolescents and adults. We provide evaluations, education and outpatient treatment, in addition to family care, relapse prevention, after-care and co-dependency treatment. We counsel addicts, children whose parents are struggling or are addicted to chemicals, adult children of alcoholics and addicts and others who are affected by addiction.

In addition, we can help parents or family members learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and depression. Assistance with confronting and/or intervening with loved ones is also available.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Brain injury is an important public health issue. The problems that result from injury, such as memory and thinking, are often invisible, and awareness about brain injury among the general public is limited. We recognize two definitions of brain injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an insult to the brain not of a degenerative or congenital nature, but caused by an external physical force. Acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that has occurred after birth and is not hereditary, congenital or degenerative. ABIs include strokes, tumors, seizures, infections and others.

Brain injury can have a life-long impact on many areas of functioning. The emotional/behavioral areas are among the most confusing for family members and caregivers, and an area where the individual is often left feeling alone.

Depression, both short and long term, is prevalent among survivors of brain injuries. Appropriate therapeutic intervention is valuable and important in helping survivors deal with their injuries.
